I think $40K would be overpaying for a 2004 G500 with 130K miles but yes, they do hold their values pretty well. Some of the reasons probably include the general popularity of SUVs (the craze continues), exclusivity (only a few hundred to a few thousand have been imported to the U.S. annually) and minimum style changes (style hasn't changed much since they first came out in the late 1970s). A $40K (or less) 2004 (or older) G looks a lot like a $120K+ 2016 model.
These have long been high dollar "boutique" vehicles as they were selling for six figures (new) 20+ years ago when Europa International was importing them as grey market vehicles.
The full-size woody Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer brings pretty good money in the resale market too and it had only see relatively minor style changes for much of its run as well.
