He is a 'non-traditional' Med School student who will be turning 34 in a couple weeks. He worked all through High School and college summers to buy this GrandAm new with cash during his Junior year of college. Worked 5 years for IBM in the Software industry and saw his job outsourced to India during the Great Recession.
Decided he never again wanted a job which could be so easily outsourced, and had grown bored with software, so he turned to a career in Medicine. Paid his own way for a two-year Pre-Med program at Harvard, then worked in the Reasearch Labs at Yale for 3 years bulding his resume for Med School admission. Was a Co-author and listed contributor to a number of published research projects while at Yale, Harvard, and a summer at Stanford.
Now he has a full tuition scholarship for Med School so his only costs are housing, food, and vehicle upkeep. He has turned down all financial aid for years 1 & 2 of Med School and expects to do the same for year 3. He said he might have to accept loan money for year 4 but is trying to avoid that if at all possible.
So yeah, this is a child who is definitely not a financial drain on his parents. Although his mother and I were both ready to trade him in for a different model when he was 13. There is always hope for those difficult teanage years.
