So I won't tell what it was, but it was BIG! When you join the left lane brigade, ie. those who do their best to drive as fast as possible without getting a ticket (80 mph), what tends to happen is they bunch up when people who drive slower stray into the left lane. So you will have bunches of 8 to 10 (or more) cars all fairly close together. If you let more than 3 or 4 car lengths open up people will often pass on the right. While they'll spread out when traffic thins, you'll often go for many miles in these bunches and when it's busy (as on Friday night when we leave) we'll often spend most of the trip in these groups. When I keep it at 70mph (the speed limit) almost everyone drives faster than that. So I'm constantly being passed and I'm rarely behind anyone. So the reason I get better mileage at 80mph is that I'm DRAFTING when I'm in a group. When I do 70mph I'm pushing all my own air. The Jeep is such a brick it makes that much difference. The proof is that on the few occasions I've made the trip in very light traffic conditions, when I drive 80mph I'd get 16 mpg. And the reason most Saabnet members wouldn't catch it is that you're used to driving aerodynamic cars. Believe it not a tail wind or head wind can make a difference. One time I kept it at 66mph with a strong tailwind and got 25.5 mpg--with a Jeep!
