I almost asked if you were drafting, but figured driving habits would be the same... I can believe that! Think about the difference it makes on a bicycle. I had a friend with a very low powered suzuki and he spoke a lot about the effects of drafting behind trucks etc, as he almost needed that to get up bigger hills... that said, I don't really have much experience with this as I really do not like following too closely. I'm not really sure the gap required to be in or out of the turbulent flow of a car in front, but I allot ~3 seconds... even in conditions as you describe... I'd rather let cars get in front of me than be at fault in a collision (rear ending someone due to inadequate stopping distance)...
It is amazing how many Wranglers I see these days. I often wonder about the aerodynamics/drag aspect, especially with the sides off/top off booting along, it must be quite the wind scoop! I also wonder a little about the safety component of blasting down the highway with nothing more than a roll cage, but then I think it's sure a heck of a lot more protection than a motor cycle! Good to hear you are still enjoying it!
