You misunderstood me - I was saying the opposite. The subie autoboxes seem pretty reliable (and those old saab 3 speeds are really not at all reliable!!)... Many of my friends drive subies (multiple subie owners) and I only know of one transmission issue and it was high miles. My gripe with the transmission is it is a 4 speed where the first gear is used up at low speeds to get it fast off the line, rather than saving something for highway driving. That seems to be pretty common in the NA subies with the 4 speed, but maybe paired with a turbo or bigger engine, things are better. Pretty much universally, my subie driving friends agree that the automatic is not desirable and that a 5 speed significantly improves the car. They kept the 4 speed a long time, but now have moved on to CVT which presumably is faster responding and "better geared".
