It looks like it's generally not a problem until the soot from the EGR is introduced. The intercooler hoses have traces of oil, but no buildup and no sludge. It's only post-EGR tube that the goop kicks in.
It's hard to break up what is the result of normal design shortcomings coupled with 180k and what might be the result of insufficient maintenance or overfilled oil. I have the large Wix filter installed with exactly 7 quarts of oil, leaving the oil about halfway between min and max on the dipstick.
I'm not big on defeating emissions systems, but I will probably have to install an EGR block plate on this. I cleaned the MAP and the intake elbow (below) and will be replacing the intake ("elephant") hose, but I think the only way to prevent this from happening is to eliminate the EGR.
