It wasn't planned, but someone forgot what a red light means and totalled the wife's 2006 Sonata. Fortunately they hit behind the rear door and most of the crash energy went into spinning the car around. No serious injuries. Due to the car's age it was immediately totalled by insurance.
After the accident she was mainly concerned with safety and Subaru gets high marks in that department. The car is roomy and decently comfortable (better than the old Sonata, but not as good as our Saabs) and is getting decent gas mileage. Yes, the 2.5 liter engine is gruff when pushed and power is just OK, but we knew that going in. The CVT is interesting mainly because you can't really tell - it's set up to emulate a conventional 6-speed automatic, down to a manual mode with paddle shifters.
Other pluses for us since new cars have a big element of future shock is that it retains a real key and dedicated hardware buttons for the HVAC system. The touchscreen is used only for the sound system and rear camera. That's really the only complaint we have, the radio is too complicated. It does have a CD slot which is a plus. (That's actually the simplest function, just pop in a disc and it plays.)
We went with the more expensive Outback rather than the Legacy sedan due to the ride height. We're getting older, with arthritis and knee problems, and the Outback is the perfect height to just swing one's rear end in and out of.
