SLK is very conventional compared to the Boxter. The mechanicals are shared with their mass-market models. The 3.5 V-6 had some timing chain issues during the early years, so later years are better in terms of durability. The manual gearbox is brand new and way better than the R170 (previous generation SLK.) The exhaust sound with the top down is absolutely intoxicating with the 3.5 liter.

I like it better because it feels more solid, rides better, noise levels are way lower with top up or down. The solid metal roof makes a huge difference in winter and bad weather in general. Not to mention safety. It does not feel as immediate in its handling due to high polar moment of inertia (can't beat a mid engine layout) but it feels really good in all kinds of driving. I especially like it at very high speed with the top down -- solid, quiet and my hair stays in place. The air scarf feature is a big plus for top down comfort. It has loads of low end torque and the manual gearbox is very slick shifting and is well matched to the engine. I highly recommend it.

Just don't put cheap tires on it. It deserves a set of Michelins.
