Without subsidy, they're now priced to directly compete with traditional cars. FWIW - your experience with a 20 year old car defines the exception rather than the mean.
After all, you found spare parts in a junk yard.
As a fellow 9000 owner (who wrenches hizzown), I can clearly see the necessary complications to gasoline powered cars to achieve the sort of efficiency baked into even the most basic EV design.
For me the tipping point came when I realized a deliberate misinformation campaign has been waged to discredit the technology. Most galling was the distraction regarding the bike practices associated with Cobalt mining.

Cobalt has been used since the 1940's to treat "desulphurize" heavy crude oil - consumed in the process.

Don't get me wrong : I consider the B234 variants to be the Pinnacle of machine design available to, and serviceable by mere mortals. Motors of higher efficiency and output require more processing power and tighter tolerances, unless they're electric.
