I've driven Europeans cars most of my adult life (since 1969) for that very reason. There was a time when ANY European car was head shoulders better than ANY American or Japanese. But that time is long gone. The highline stuff ($80K and up) is still pretty special but they sell a lot of cars under $50k. Those aren't so special and if you go head to head with comparable Japanese and yes American cars you might be surprised if you can put bias aside. In my last job I alternated between two cars equally. One was Land Rover Sport the other a well optioned Jeep Grand Cherokee. The GC drove better and everything you touched looked and felt better build and more expensive--much to my surprise. I've not driven the car Rogers is looking at but I did drive the XC90. I'll bet if you compared the 60 head to head with the CRV you might be surprised (I hope Roger does that). Throw in stellar resale and reliability and it's hard to justify the Volvo. If you are into status than yes the Volvo has the edge. Of course Roger has his Viggen Convertible when he wants to go styling
