I think you don’t understand correctly. A significant reason for panels and a storage battery in my region (Maine) is protection during an outage. You are hooked into the Grid so you can sell excess power and get credits so if during the winter the solar doesn’t cover all your needs and you can supplement from the Grid. If the Grid goes down the panels generate and the battery (Tesla) stores. The system I am getting is designed to run essential systems during an outage.
I also have a Tesla Y which I love. There is no reason for it to become so deeply discharged that systems don’t work. The fire safety of a tank of gasoline might also be considered dubious.
