Let's see here...difference in emissions between a current-model car and, say, a decently-tuned '95 model driven 12K miles annually is half a dozen lawn mowings a year or thereabouts.
Had a Prius for a week as a loaner, averaged just under 40mpg driving it like I'd drive the 9000 or the M5. Powertrain worked fine, but the chassis felt a little wonky, steering was all over the place, forward visibility sucked.
Fun and fuel-efficient - Lotus Elise. Goes fast, weighs nothing. Might even find a deal - some of the 'early adopters' are dumping them, it takes a certain degree of physical agility to get in and out of one. The Honda S2000 is the obvious alternative if the Elise doesn't fit on your practicality scale, Miatas are a good choice if you're comfortable in one, a Cooper S is a lot of fun, the SVT Focus was a tremendously nice car (don't make 'em anymore, find a good year-old used one), MR2s drive pretty nice but God are the current ones ugly.
