Golf's suspension is very crude and simple -- really does not get much simpler than front struts and rear beam axle. It's Brasilian origins show through, too -- Cofap components throughout, no Sachs or Bilsteins.
Despite this, the car feel much bigger than it is, especially at high speed. I guess those trick, really expensive, liquid-filled bushings do pay off. Handling is nothing exciting but handbook safe and reliable. Good steering feel helps a lot. As do good replacement tires -- stock tires leave a lot to be desired. With good tires the ride is very smooth, even on bad roads.
As far as roominess goes, I think it is very good. My friends drove from Toronto to Philly and back -- 4 tall adults with all their luggage, plus lots of shopping. The rear seat is very comfortable, the recline of the seatback is just about perfect and there is adequate leg and head room everywhere. Good headrests.
They got about 42 mpg and they drove FAST. 90-110 mph most of the way. Meaning on boost.
