About the 4k...Avoid the 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engines - gutless. That said, The type 32 drivetrain (4000) is wonderful, (way better than early A6's, and from a simplicity and reliability standpoint, exponentially better than any later model Audi) both for daily driving and tuning. If you get a quattro model, you will be working with quattro 1 or quattro 2, a (super rugged) full time mechanical AWD system with a center Torsen differential; if ever stuck in deeeep snow or sand, the rear diff and the center diffs can be set to a 50/50 split (in the case of the center) or locked (in the case of the rear axle) While the interior is pretty bare bones and kinda chintzy, and the exterior door handles BLOW, the bodies are usually sound - mondo galvanizing and rustproofing. The stock 2.2 SOHC I5, while not a barnburner, is torquey, revvy, nearly indestructible, and sounds unreal at full throttle ;) Be sure you dont get one with "just a snapped timing belt" - you have bent valves and dented pistons. The stock engine comes with Bosch K-jet (mechanical FI) and basic Bosch (hall effect I think) ignition... However, for swaps, there are 20 valve DOHC versions found in later 90s, (and I believe later 80 quattros) and Coupe Quattros (not to be confused with the US spec 83-85 ur-quattro, or the stunning, not legal on these shores Sport Quattro) The internet, starting with Audiworld.com and the links found there is swimming with 4k and 5k (another wonderful car, electical gremlins aside) fanatics who have done all sort of mods, from insane turbos, to an LT1 swap! More realistically, the internet has a good deal of information regarding turbo-ing the motor, whether it be through a DIY turbo header and EFI (best), or simply dropping in a 5kt motor (not as good).
I would wholeheartledly recommend picking up a 4kQ, a VW QSW, or if you want to go high dollar, a ur-q. I owned a beat-to-death QSW for a while and miss it alot. Cant wait to pick up a new one!
