I can't speak to the 90, but I did have a 86 4000 for a while. It was a great car. It was a 5cyl. The engine was strong, great matched with a 5spd. The weak points of the car:
- Exhuast hangars (always were iffy and rattled)
- Door handles (common to find some with a door that won't open due to the latch)
- Electrical (sometimes buggy power windows etc.)
Mine did start to rust a bit towards the end so look for rust spots around wheel wells. Car was very easy to work on.
I also think the 90s and 100s are good little cars. If I needed a beater I would probably try to find one of those to drive around. Doubt there will be many decent 4000's out there anymore. Car would almost be 20 years old now.
