Some AWD models (cars primarily) provide 100% power to the front wheels until slippage occurs but I would say the majority split the power constantly. Therefore, the real comparison would be to test a car available in both AWD and RWD (e.g. various BMW's, Infiniti G35).
As for the numbness, I think it has more to do with the design of the steering mechanism itself, not so much with the fact that the wheels are being driven (either fully for FWD or partial/full for AWD).
The other thing to remember is that if the front wheels are driven, then there is an additional component (the halfshaft) in the suspension. This, I would suspect contributes to a slightly different feeling; I can't say it is numbness but surely it feels different.
