While I recognize and understand the differences in the products, option packages, pricing issues, targeting different audiences, etc, etc., I still question what is largely badge engineering throughout the auto industry.
Why have both Fords and Mercurys? (or Lincolns that are fancier versions of the same thing)
Hyundai and Kia share a lot of cars and parts (two Korean bottom-feeders--just what the world needs)
There's loads of overlap in Audi and VW.
Infinitis are tricked out Nissans
A Lexus is mostly a gussied up Toyota
Dodge and Chrysler (and previously Plymouth) are the same under the skin. And have you noticed how much the new MB R-series look like Chrysler Pacificas?
And the 9-2X and 9-7X? Thank you General.
It is one thing to share a floorpan, like the 9000 did with Alfa, but so many cars today are just rebadged, retrimmed and maybe slightly reskinnned versions of something else with diffferent options and trim. GM is just the most obvious example (with the least imagination).
I can't believe more cars are sold in total because of this. It just gives people more choices. Choice is good, but only if there is really a difference. I know I'm really oversimplifying but I just think it's kind of a waste.
End of rant.
