like one of the Scions. Underpowered, but good mileage.
I'd probably do a Jetta/Golf/Beetle, although they do have some maintenance issues. My neighbor has a turbo beetle and gets 40-45 normal driving.
A turbo diesel is a lot of fun, very elastic engine feel. Rented a little TD Nissan tall wagon in France a few years back and got nearly 30 mph running 90 to 100, fully loaded with 4 people and 2 weeks of luggage. When I slowed down I got 35-40, still driven hard.
Of course you could always do a Prius.
As for the tiny cars like a Metro, no thanks. Had one as a loaner once. Felt safer in the '59 VW Beetle I had many years ago.
