I have no idea about your driving habits or budget, but...
The average US driver does 10000 miles or so per year. That's 192/week, or for your 9000 that's 6.85 gal per week (at 28 mpg). If you're driving say a turbo diesel like a Jetta that gets 40 mpg, that's 4.8 gal per week. 2.85 gallon difference. At say $3.50/gal for gas, and $3.65 gal/diesel (usually a little higher than premium gas here in eastern MA), that's a savings of $6/week.
If you purchase the car for say $2k, your payoff time with your gas savings will be 6.4 years. My conclusion: having a second car to deal with high fuel prices is poor economics, since your Saab is already getting decent mileage. If you had a truck getting 11 mpg (like my co-worker's V6 Dodge Dakota), it'd be a different story. Ditto if you were replacing the Saab - opting for good mileage is a smart thing to do.
