It just seems they have chosen the worst possible Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 13 Jul 2006 11:10:26 In Reply to: The right thing may be quite involved, Ari [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 13 Jul 2006 11:10:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
means to address this issue.
1) People will still place a child seat in the front passenger position whether or not the LATCH system exists.
2) Older child seats (and I am sure many are still in use) have no means to mate to the LATCH anchors.
3) Pre-teen children are too large for a booster seat, yet may still be very small framed.
It would seem that using a single stage air bag could result in serious injuries or deaths for all of the above situations.
I realize that addition of a LATCH system would require modifications to the front seat structure, and addition of a top tether anchor loop somewhere behind the front seat. I also know that these modifications may require time to design, test, manufacture, and distribute thru the Dealer network. Temporarily disabling the dual stage air bag feature may be the only means to meet Gov't Regs until the above work can be accomplished, but it doesn't sound like a very good permanent solution.
Maybe there is more to the story and Toyota is rushing towards a better final fix. I am certain their customers are hoping for this.
