We have a 325 wagon we got used to replace our unreliable MINI. We chose it because, besides the Prius (which we seriously considered, were it not for a sunroof and heated seats) that was small for the city, had modern safety stuff, and had a hatch/wagon versatility with decent reliability. I'd had an '87 325 convertible and we got it as a joke.. called it SammyJo, and drove it into the ground.
Last year, when I started thinking of getting a new wagon, what turned me off that sexy 5-series wagon.. the insipid notion of having TWO BMWs, the crappy interior deets (cheap, dangerously placed cupholders and.. naturally, iDrive geekyness), the mandated all wheel drive -oh, and that it cost almost $20,000 more than new 9-5. I haven't looked back. The Saab checks so many of the boxes the 5 series does, adds CR rated reliability.. it was a no brainer, even when BMW was so discounting leases on 530ix wagons that they were almost the same monthly.
