You are right about BMWs leaning too far towards luxury. I think that the last BMW that was sold as a drivers car in the States was the 2002.
I had a euro-spec 1984 318i (new 1985 body style in USA)when I lived in Norway that came with zero bling and glitz. No power steering, windows or seats although it did have servo assist brakes, no AC, cloth seats etc. And because it lacked all the boulevard cruiser crap it was lithe and agile, probably the most enjoyable car I have ever owned. The tax free price in Europe was less than $7000. The same car in the USA had all the bling and power equipment, cost $14-15,000 and was not nearly as much fun to drive.
Even the M cars are not so much fun as every day drivers. They are overpowered, harsh riding and brutal rather than lithe - like an American muscle car with good handling.
