Truck-based SUVs are so 1990's

Rollover hazards are high enough to make them less safe for the occupants than other vehicles. Combine with the trucklike ride, handling, and poor mileage and they're decidedly out of fashion.
I won't argue with the need for space, with 2 little ones we own a 9-5 wagon and a Honda Odyssey. Compared with the truck SUVs, the car-based crossovers will have a lower center of gravity, have a better ride, and handle and brake better...i.e. they'll be safer for your little bundle of joy.
In my experience: nothing beats sliding rear doors for getting kids into car seats. Bring the car seat you want to use TO THE DEALERSHIP and try it's position in the back seat and see how it effects the position of the front seats. This may heavily influence your buying decision, but it depends on the seat, the car, and your physical sizes.
The Mazda5 is a cool tall wagon. Sliding rear doors too. You might want to eyeball the new Ford Edge and Mazda CX7's. Or just go straight to minivan-land, get a Sienna or Odyssey, and enjoy the most comfortable, useful, and safe means of family conveyance ever conceived by man.
