On your list, I'd go for the VW first, followed by the Xterra. The VW supposedly is a really nice SUV, and I just like the cool factor of the Xterra. The Toyota and the Pathfinder seem too soccer-momish for me, and I don't like the Jeep's styling (too boxy and Durango-like IMO).
I'd add the Mazda CX-7 to that list. If I had to get an SUV, I'd probably go that route, although I've never driven one. I've also heard great stuff about the Volvo XC90. I haven't heard anything bad about the 9-7X, but I'm not a fan of the Trailblazer at all.
