There are a lot Land Rover forums and I've included the link to one of them.
Here's a question: have you gone to drive one yet? If so, did it change your perception? I have looked and looked at Discoveries (and now LR3's) but never been brave enough to buy one. The maintenance scares me (and I have a Saab AND an Alfa Romeo!) and I have never been impressed with how the Discos drive. The are very, very slow even with the V8 and they feel real unstable. I haven't driven an LR3 yet. The gas mileage is dismal for both.
I know you looked at a lot of alternatives, but this is why I still like the new Pathfinder. Still has that boxy, tough look like the LR, but has better mileage and far better reliability.
Of all the Discoveries, take a look at the last two years of them (2003-04?) as then were slightly restyled and have a bit more power. Again, I LOVE the LR but have never been brave enough to get one. Like you mentioned though, if she really wants one, get it. As long as you know what you're getting into, and don't have a problem with having to take it in from time to time, I say go for it! I did this with my Saab 9-3 and have not regretted it; I still love the car!
