The problem is that you really don't know what is going to fail and when - and it seems many of them leave the car totally undrivable, or at least not safely drivable. I understand that cars in general have problems, but the potential problems need to be something that can be worked around - IME there are just too many single points of failure in these cars for me to feel comfortable selecting one for this purpose. I imagine by '04 many of them were worked out, but there is a substantial difference in price between a ~'97 C280 or 318i and an '04 9-5 - like double. That translates directly into higher insurance premiums and higher cost of registration. The reason to stick with an older car is to avoid that. Plus, finding a qualified person to work on a Saab is tough - finding someone to work on a BMW or MB is quite an easier task. It's bad enough finding good folks to work on any car, but that task becomes nigh impossible it seems when it's got Saab written on it. When my buddy's 9-3's ABS module failed (no speedo, etc.) a shop told him he needed a new ECU, when the throttle body failed (limp home mode) they kept it for a week then told him he needed a new ECU. Again. Both times a quick phone call to me got the problem solved, but I just can't have those types of scenarios with this car. Related, these dumb problems are exactly the types of problems this car cannot have.
