BMW would have you believe there are four kinds of riding and motorcycles. R1150"R" or Roadsters for urban riding, R1150GS, "GS" for gelande and strasse or trail and street, sometimes called dual sport riding, the RT Reise Tour or travel tour, the touring bike which is what I ride , and R1200S, the "S" for sport riding, a.k.a. crotch rocket. There are 1100's, 1150's and 1200's, each displacement bringing a host of changes and improvements.
The 2004 R1150R is almost the last year for the 1150 design and some say the best year with the twin plug head. There were some 2005's and just a few 2006's before the 2007 total redesign for the R1200R. Great bike, very versatile, you can tour with optional big windshields and bags, strip the bike naked for sport riding, a basic naked bike or standard are another couple of names for what BMW calls a Roadster.
I personally prefer the better wind protection and more upright riding position of the GS or RT and would never even consider the cramped riding position of an "S", but that's why BMW makes four different kinds, each to his own.
