According to totalmotorcycle.com, the BMW weighs 17 lbs more (dry) than the 5th gen VFR. But it makes up for that by having 25 fewer hp (OK, it does have 11.2 ft-lbs more torque, and all us turbo folks know how that relates to real-world-driving).

Modern X-ring chains are considerably less maintenance-intensive than the old O-ring (or bare) chains, but for anyone riding serious miles, or just hate regular maint, chains are a burden. They are considerably more efficient and lighter than shaft-drives. At least BMW (like Gold Wings) only have one 90 degree change in motion with the horizontally-opposed engine. For a bike like mine (and all the shaft-driven cruisers), a shaft would be two 90's, whereas a chain has none of that transmission loss.
BMW sport bikes use chain. Must not be all bad.

Linked brakes are GREAT. Yes, some "purists" hate them, but for most people they work great. If you're looking for a track bike, probably don't want them, but there are much better track bikes. Although I guess "fast" Freddie Spencer used the VFR800 as his personal bike at his track school. As much as I like them, I'd gladly trade them for latest version ABS.

I've never experienced the Telelever front end. I think the jury is pretty uniform in praising it. Again, BMW's sport bikes don't have it, so must have some drawbacks, but perhaps that's primarily the track wannabe's.
