I've driven my 4-door (5-dr, whatever) Viggen for 9 yrs now and absolutely love it. It's been so reliable that I may just keep it. And the combo of build quality, utility, performance, and mpg just cannot be found in anything new. But I'm looking at possible alternatives..
For me, I've decided I could be fine with less room/utility because my wife drives a wagon. So, I'm considering focussing on mpg + fun. Looking into MINI Coopers. The styling is anything but boring, handling is excellent, the 'S' should provide enough ZIP to be fun, and combined mpg should be at least 5-7mpg higher vs the Viggen. And a nice 2yr old used one can be had for $20k.
I think the killer for you is if you insist on "no smaller". Good luck with that one. Anything as roomy as the 9-3 will lose in one of the other areas. I'm with on the Audi's... beautiful cars. And if I were more intersted on room vs mpg, I would be looking seriously for an A3. A friend has been driving an A3 for years and it is very very nice.
