You've definately hit the nail on the head--"ten years has made a world of difference." The automotive world is constantly changing. I've been driving European cars since 1969 primarily because of their unique qualities, but in the last ten years the rest of the automotive world has caught up. A decade ago I would have rather pulled my own teeth out with a pair of rusty pliers than own an American car, let alone a Chrysler product which I considered the absolute bottom of the bottom. And here I am driving a Jeep, of all things, which I bought solely based on it's virtues as a product and thus far I've found it continually has exceeded my expectations. Who would have thought? Who would have thought my Japanese built Subaru would have been a big disappointment on a number of levels? It's a whole new world automotivewise and I guess you'll have to find your own way.
