There's definitely not much in that class that's going to be fuel efficient and good off-road, since everything seems to have to have a 250hp V6 and weight 4000lbs these days. With your long commute, you're probably looking to stick with something fairly new too.
A couple of unusual options did cross my mind though. The Jeep Liberty diesel was discussed earlier on this board and should put down similar fuel economy numbers to the Patriot. I've taken a gas Liberty off road and it's definitely the real deal. Remove the silly chin spoiler and lift it a bit and it would be great, and I'm sure the diesel gets you plenty of cred on the trail too.
The Suzuki Grand Vitara might have flown below your radar, but it's a also got decent 4-cylinder fuel economy and is available with proper 4WD with low range, and definitely hits a budget sweet spot. Lift kits and skid plates are available for it, and Suzuki certainly knows how to build a capable small truck.
I'm not sure either of the above are much easier to find than the trail rated Patriot, but they might be worth considering.
