I can't speak for the Patriot as I don't know anything about the platform, but the Liberty is up for serious duty. Keep in mind little utes like the Suzuki or even the previous gen Kia Sportage are work horses of the third world, where many people don't want the gas bills that go with bigger vehicles. Light weight goes a LONG was off road. A good set of tires on one of these and you'll be able to go more places than "serious" SUVs with factory road tires. Throw in a modicum of off road driving skills too and all of sudden you're showing up the Wrangler newbies.
Definitely get the Wrangler if that's what you want - I agree with others that you'll never really be happy with something else if you have your heart set on the Wrangler - but sometimes it can be fun to run something a little different, and there are advantages to the smaller SUVs.
