I took the advice offered on this forum:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/othercars/index.html?bID=7770
I called the closest local dealer for a test drive of an automatic Mazda5 Sport. Luckily they had a 6-speed Sport on the lot (silver/black). We loaded the car seats and kids into the 3rd row, salesman in row 2, and me and my very pregnant wife up front and away we went. Test drive was a nice mix of city and highway driving with a maneuvering test in a vacant parking lot. My wife was impressed before and after she took the wheel. Kids loved it, and there was just enough space for what we need. It has 3rd row has LATCH anchors, unlike most other options.
FWIW - The day before we'd had an extended (all day with commute) test drive of a 2013 Kia Sorento LX with 3rd row. It was pretty nice, but lacked ACC and a manual transmission. The 3rd row was difficult to access, and the price was a about $2K more. We also considered a Mitsubishi Outlander, but I read that the 3rd row is flimsy.
I called a second local Mazda dealership who tracked down a mica red exterior/sand interior Mazda5 Sport 6-sp in Georgia. I wanted the sand interior and this dealership was a few hundred cheaper, with a much better sales-experience rating. I REALLY wanted a gray/sand combo (there was one of these at another GA dealership) but it was sold already. Apparently there are only 3-4 Mazda5 Sport 6-speeds in the southeast.
I made a down payment to acquire and hold it until the middle of the month, when I'll take delivery. Current incentives are $500 dealer cashback and 0%/60 months - can't do much better than that!
Thanks to everyone who contributed to validating my decision process. Now, I just have to prep the 2002 9-3SE 5-sp for sale and post on CL :(
We'll be keeping the 2002 9-5 Aero SW :)
