and we really don't know the details of the collision in the photo, ie how hard the impact was, how the occupants fared, even if the damage really is all that concerning... it is after all just a photo from the internet (and just the first google image hit I got). you are right, it must have been a larger vehicle, and that was my main concern because the seat backs are closer higher up with more crumple room low down. Being rear ended by a car would be less concerning, but that is always true...
ultimately it comes down to choosing what is best suited for one's needs and tolerance of risk, and like Justin says, no vehicle is invincible in all possible situations... Most likely a bigger heavier 6 (or 7/8) seater would have done better in that collision, but it would then most likely be less nimble in collision avoidance manoeuvers... that is probably more important...
I'm certainly not trying to disparage your or other 5 owners' purchasing decision or advice, and I apologize for putting up a photo that might be hard to look at... Swedemurphy's commentary struck a chord though - as he put it, anyone in the 3rd row of his rear-ended minivan would have been killed in an otherwise normally survivable collision. I'm regularly surprised by how much the 3rd row seats in vehicles tend to be less well thought out than the 2nd row, and perhaps that is why his comments resonated. With the 5 rental, I was really struck by how close the rear seats are to the hatch, and I was not comfortable with that... but the same is true in many vehicles to varying degrees. I'm probably just being paranoid in that regard, but I was not alone in this observation... it is also possible that the new models have stronger seats etc than the old ones (our rental would have been around 2006/7 vintage)... I'm not even sure if our rental had side curtain airbags or if it was optional at that point...
