Volvo V40 2004 coolant Anders question... Posted by Baggsly [Email] (#2350) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Baggsly) on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 18:22:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So a friend's mom as a V40 wagon. She's getting a CIL indicating the thermostat is bad/not opening/engine not heating fully.
It has Volvo blue antifreeze in it, and her reservoir was dry. I told her she should get some, and I'd check to see if there was an aftermarket version which was ok to use with her OEM fluid. The dealer is charging $30. a gallon for Volvo brand.
She went to O'Reilly auto parts and they sold her a gallon of 50/50 dilute Peak long life antifreeze, which is green. It does say on the bottle that it can be mixed with any colour fluid, but I'm a little leery of that. Is it ok? she's already added it to the car, so should I suggest she get it flushed now? Is there a brand like Zerez G-05 or something else that is equal to the Volvo blue branded fluid? I already let her hear me smacking my head against the wall once she told me this...
I replaced the t/stat today, Volvo boxed Whaler. I didn't do the sensor yet, as I'm hoping to get her done cheaply. The reason I ask is below.
The original is also a Whaler, but it has a flow direction arrow on it which the new one does not. The air bubble hole on the new is on the other side and end from the 2003 t/stat also. I put the new t/stat in with the air hole on the high side (towards backside of radiator). That should be ok shouldn't it?
Sequence of events:
-Mark replaces t/stat w/ Volvo dealer one.
-Mark notices coolant reservoir is empty.
-Mark suggests owner should get antifreeze.
-Dodo (yes, really her nickname) runs out and buys Peak green fluid.
-Dodo adds it to her car, and drives around.
-What now?
Thanks for any help and/or suggestions!
Mark :-)
