I don't think that is exactly accurate. VAG has used G11, G12, G12+, and G12++ all at various points, sometimes multiple varieties in a single year depending on engine. And, it seems them dumped G12++ and went back to +. So, that's fun.
The G12x are similar to Dexcool in that they are OATs, but Dexcool has 2EHA which is specifically not recommended in VAG cooling systems due to its plasticizing effect. (I don't think you were implying it was, however).
All the OATs are in theory compatible, with the exception of Dexcool for its aforementioned 2EHA which must be used with caution. The breakdown would be the concentration of silicates in a particular application.
I did blow it in my post, though - "VAG Blue" is G11 and not compatible. I was thinking about BMW Blue, which is (was) G05.
