Anders - thanks for the input. The dealer suggests a timing belt change at 105,000 miles; I'm at 82,000 now - and drive it less than 10K a year. And since I want to keep the car, my initial thinking was why tempt fate on an interference engine - but perhaps I can hold off another year or two and not have to really worry about a broken belt ruining my day (and lightening my wallet).
I checked out a Volvo board that is somewhat analogous to Saabnet (it is not nearly as informative and interesting to follow), and there was a wide variety of responses regarding Volvo timing belt change intervals. Seems as though people living in hot climates need to change the belts at 7 years or 70K miles (supposedly), while colder climates allow a longer belt life. Since I'm in New Jersey, it really never gets too hot or too cold (at least not in recent years).
The car runs like a top - really, really a solid car. Most bullet proof car I have ever owned. Turning radius is awful, and it drinks gasoline shamelessly, but it is just a pleasure to own.
Thx again.
