I just turned in a 2013 Legacy today and was actually pretty impressed. I've never been much a Subaru fan (except I guess the WRX) though I see how they fulfill a niche. However, I really liked both the ride and handling of the Legacy a lot.
I know people hate CVTs, but it sounds like a huge upgrade from the previous autos. I did have the super steep off the line Asian gearing, but was otherwise responsive and calm on the highway. The engine was reasonably powerful and, well, was a Suby flat four for better and worse. I got 28mpg mixed which I thought was okay. I think some of the small displacement turbo inline fours out there (like from Chevy) are better in terms of power and economy and the 2.4l 198hp Hyundai I drove recently was extremely good, but I wouldn't say the engine was a deal breaker by any means. I have no idea how this applies to the Outback which really looks like an small SUV now, but my opinion of Subarus went up a lot after this rental.
