You're right, it really is a very similar dynamic. It's always hard separate someones experience with a car with how they drive and take care of it. As a consequence people's experience with a given car can vary greatly. It's complicated further by the fact the build quality can vary from car to car. Throw in crooked/incompetent mechanics and it's very hard to make bald faced claims about any car. The Jeep Cherokee (pre-Grand) once had the distinction of having the worst reliability record of any car CU had ever tested--it had almost all black circles. Yet a guy I worked with had two of them, had owned several before that, his kids owned them and they loved them. I've seen Jaguars with 250K miles. My cousin owned a Vega and never had a problem--he loved it. My brother has an '08 Outback with 90K that he bought new and hasn't had a problem. I bought mine used so don't know exactly how it was cared for. But I did sell new ones, I did sell numerous used ones when I was a dealer, and I know a lot of people who own them. I think Subarus have many virtues and there's much I like about them personally, but I'll stand by my statement that anyone looking to buy a new one should take a hard look at the problems other people have had with them as they age.
