I agree. Most of my friends own subarus, and they are pretty good winter cars. That said, most have run into costly repairs, dumped the car and bought another Subaru without even trying anything else. A bit strange, because they tout them as Toyota or Honda like reliability but they are actually a bit more middle of the road. And conversely, many think of Saabs as unreliable, when really they are about middle of the road. I remember seeing a JD Power reliability ranking from a few years back, and Subaru and Saab were right next together in the middle, behind Honda and Toyota (Porsche topped the list!) but well ahead of VW and Audi (who were way near the bottom), Volvo, etc... Suzuki was right at the bottom too, yet their advertising claimed "Japanese reliability"... so much of it is marketing!
I think the perception that people have with Saabs as being unreliable may go back to the c900 era, when more little things went wrong, but few were unsurmountable (I have 2 of them)... and most of those little things were avoided with proper care and feeding (some c900s seemed to go forever without issue and some had many issues)... So for me, I just fix the issues or get them fixed... even a hg or putting in a new tranny is cheaper than buying a new car, and the body is so tough it's worth it... People hear about me fixing things and think they are unreliable, but they aren't really... if they kept the Subie 20 years, just as much stuff would go wrong for sure... The new Saabs aren't as easy to work on but seem to have fewer issues... The HG job on a Subie is tougher though due to the orientation of the engine, and where it is pretty common on some model years, it can be costly! Even changing plugs takes a fair bit of effort, but it's not the end of the world even to DIY, just harder than in a Saab.
