I'm surprised there isn't a little more love for the Grand Cherokee! Both the first and second generation are great vehicle. Surprisingly enjoyable ride and handling, nice interiors (esp the 2nd gen), very manageable size, real off-road and hauling cred, and either nice V8s or the indestructible AMC inline 6. They're SO much better than an Explorer or especially the horrible GM SUVs of the same era. Transmissions are a weak point but probably okay if they've made it this far, and even a nice one is dirt cheap these days. Go for it! I've got a '79 International Scout for my SUV needs (that would probably impress the boys at the job site) but for a more practical replacement I would very likely go for a Grand Cherokee (or I could probably be talked into a LR Discovery I too).
