I'm not so sure I agree with you on the Miele dishwashers, just replaced two ten year old ones. The cost of parts and labor get to a point where it makes more sense to get a new one. If you fixed everything that could and eventually would go wrong it'd double the price of a new one. My take on why the European makers shifted their philosophy was when the Lexus 400 hit the market. Here was a car that compared to their top of the line cars at a price that undercut their mid-sized models. I don't know if they knew Lexus was them selling below what they cost (which I've heard--not sure how true it was) or that they really were not truly equivalent cars but I think it totally freaked them out. I think they figured if they couldn't beat them they'd join them. So they started cutting back on body work, materials and all the little things you can't see. I can remember being appalled at how flimsy and cheaply built my '95 3 series was compared to my '91 9000. These days there really is very little difference in fit, finish and materials in European, Japanese and American cars at a given price point. Throw in the complicated nature of modern cars plus ever growing "gizmo-itus" and the notion of longevity/long term ownership is dead as a Dodo-bird. I find it exceedingly sad.
