Not long ago I rebuilt my very used (82 rear, 87 front) calipers. Reason I had to was e-brake failure on the front and curiosity on the condition of the rear. From ruptured rubber seals on the front, corrosion had done quite a number on the piston surfaces. I replaced them with good uncorroded pistons, cleaned out the e-brake mechanism of dried gunky grease and repacked with fresh caliper grease, plus new seals. They now work as best as the caliper will allow. The rear condition was an eye opener. Even though I flushed the fluid regularly, fluid had congealed and hardened inside both units, clogging up the fluid channels so that pressure was only available on one side of the caliper, which explained the uneven pad wear. I cleared out the fluid channels, cleaned and polished the piston surfaces. The braking performance improvement is very noticable all around. None of the refurbish work was all that difficult and it will remain my choice of periodic brake system maintenance.
