I agree with you on BPV's function.... Although some seem to believe the BPV is a performance part, I see it as a safety valve. The Turbo produces the boost, the BPV relieves or blows off excessive amounts of boost that could damage the engine, primarily upon rapid throttle closing but other times too.
My question was intended to be, "Will I be at risk of damaging my engine if I move up to the next higher level of spring rate, since there are very strong indications the current spring is releasing far too often"
I installed the next step stiffer spring last night and heard no "hooting" this morning on my drive to work. The "hooting" had gotten to the point of being very annoying. I see no reason for the BPV to release when doing steady state 30mph driving as mine was doing recently.
The instructions Forge included with the valve cautioned that too stiff of spring would lead to loss of performance due to turbo spool down without the by-pass air flow keeping the turbo spinning during low load.
The green spring I removed was shorter than the blue and yellow springs too! I don't know if it was always shorter by design, or is now shorter due to metal fatigue.
I will keep a watchfull eye on things and convert back (possibly order a full set of new springs to ensure I have a good minimum setting spring) if I see symptoms the current spring is too stiff.
