I've never heard or read about the filter being bypassed. My understanding - the bypass feature on the filter housing is for the cooler. The cooler is bypassed until the temp reaches a certain point as determined by a thermostat inside the housing. I can't imagine unfiltered oil is passed on to the engine under any circumstances. Doesn't make sense. As far as catching junk in a filter pre turbo, that to me says standard oil filters are limited, or they become less effective as the miles tick on. I got my trusty Haynes manual here showing a nifty oil passage diagram, and it shows the oil being fed from the pump and then into the filter before it heads up through the engine. 8 psi is a blip in the pressure curve as the engine starts. Takes maybe 1 second until pressure climbs above that. If there is a below 8psi bypass feature, it lasts for a very short time. Corrections are welcome.
