We are long time Saab owners and have used pretty much exclusively Valvoline full synthetic 20W-50 in all of our Saab turbos ('82 900, '83 900, 88 9KT). I also use it in my Sonett3. I prefer this oil because it is hot where I live (Phoenix) and I want the additional viscosity. Our mechanic has an 87 9KT w/ 630K miles on it and he has used nearly exclusively the same oil and grade. From our long time experience there is no better oil for turbos. Say what you will about it not being the right oil according to Saab specs or whatever, Saab turbos won't last 350K + miles if this was bad oil. I will always use it. I'm also interested in learning what others use just for comparison.

As far as changing it goes, for the last several years I have done the following: every 2.5K miles, change the filter and add ~ 1qt to make up for the new filter. The next 2.5K miles I change the filter and all the oil. You may argue that this is throwing away good oil and that may be the case. However, being that the oil is the lifeblood of any engine, I'm willing to pay for good synthetic oil more often rather than risk a blown up engine and the most inopportune time and face the costly repairs of a rebuild later on. Until this maintenance schedule is shown to be bad for the car I'm staying the course. My two cents.
