Sure it is a debate. In the context of failing engines due to heat and stress in dyno or racing situations...supposedly a performance hallmark for Mobile 1 oil, I am suspect of the conditions which lead to some of the engine failures . Why would 60 percent of NASCAR use off the shelf Mobile 1 if it were going to fail? You sound as though witnessing a failure or seeing oil properties that have the consistency of weak coffee as objective evidence of bad oil. I say it is a subjective POV...and, debatable.
I had a '82 900 turbo...no cooling lines to the turbo that year. I put over 65k a year on that car for 3 years in So. Cal. I was a sales guy. One of my more fun things to do was make a run from Oceanside to Las Vegas at 2am. I would make the run up Halloran Pass, ten miles..6 percent grade and stop at the top, pop the hood to view the turbo and exhaust color....which was always a nice yellow color. I used Mobile 1...I think 5-20 back then. That is all they had. The car, last I heard, had 360,000+ miles on it. Never had any engine work...nothing. And that car was driven very hard.
I may sound as though I am defending here...I am not...
