changes made justifying the name change, the '94 to '97 900 ie 90% the same as the 9-3 from '98 on, cosmetic differences asside.
Computer is one way to go, but it is expensive. Several out there: Abbott, Maptun, BSR, Trent, Nordic, more... I bought the Abbott chip and am very pleased. I understand though that Maptun will get you even more power. As much as 270hp =:-0 I will warn you that the automatic tranny generally can't take quite as much strain, plus shift points are slower than the manual, so you may not get to this level of performance. (Computer may fix this, however. I really can't comment here as I have a stick...)
Still haven't dyno'd my ride yet. Was going to last week, but some unexpected things came up... I suspect I'm somewhere in the 230 to 240 range.
Computer is one way, a cheaper, but less perfomance is a manual boost controller. Really a matter of economics. Chips are anywhere from $400 to $1100, and can get you some realy kick. The boost controllers are around $100 to $200, and while it will get up and go, it's not quite the same level as the computer swap out.
As with any performance upgrades, it is really the sum of many parts, not just one thing. I have a 2.5 inch CAT back exhaust and Forge BOV as well. Many also recommend getting a larger exhaust after the turbo and before the CAT, too. I am looking to install the Viggen intercooler and the Abbott Viggen Rescue Kit over the next couple of months. I had just done the ECU and springs last December, also had to fix a leaky tranny input shaft (upgrades had nothing to do with this, leaking before the upgades). That fix alone was $1100, so the car budget is naturally on hold until I build it back up..;-)
Your 9-3, you don't mention whether it is the LPT or the HOT. If it is the LPT, you could upgrade the turbo and basically build a HOT, and then Viggen.
If money were not a factor (and when is it not? read above...) you could swap out your tranny for a manual (hee hee, love to rebel against Mom and Dad...
Here is what I did in chronological order:
Saab Sport Exhaust, last June 2000
Abbott ECU and Wastegate kit, December 2000 (b-day present from wife)
Abbott Springs, December 2000 (Christmas present from wife)
AutoMeter A-pilar mounted boost gauge December 2000(Christmas present from Dad)
Forge BOV, January 2001, present to self...
Viggen IC in the works...
Abbott Viggen Rescue Kit in the works...
Ramblin' once again. In any case, what ever you do, there is plenty for you in resources (right here in this BB) and parts/upgrades.
Good luck and keep Saabing!
Jim M.
