Hey,
I'm sure you'll find that not all Saab-owners are stuck-up or jealous or whatever it is. On the contrary I believe you'll come to realize that what we have is a small and loving family of addicts of one of the world's best automobiles. And driving a reasonably tuned and "bettered" Saab is one of the best automotive experiences around.
I also think we try to be friendly to one another and help eachother out whenever possible. I've done my share of helping people get performance parts as I am (at least in this case) lucky enough to live in Sweden, so Saab parts (both replacement, aftermarket and performance) are in abundance.
For your car I would suggest the following recipe:
1) You need to upgrade your exhaust. Thinking basic laws of physics the most important part to upgrade is closest to the turbo. You want a 3" downpipe (that's what the part closest to the turbo is called). After that you need a more free-flowing catalyst. After the catalyst it's more or less up to you if you want to stay with stock (for the sleeper look...) or go 2,5" or 3" the rest of the way.
2) K&N air filter. Keep it in the stock airbox as it's difficult to install an open-air filter in the 9-3 engine bay.
3) Reprogrammed ECU. Basically your car is no different from a 185 hp 9-3 apart from the computer software and the fact that you have no BPC valve. Installing the BPC valve is no problem, and can be installed by any Saab dealer. Software is trickier, but there are several good companies around. (Personally I'd contact Maptun in Sweden, http://www.maptun.com, as I have several friends who are very happy with their software as well as their service.) What you need to do is figure out where you want to take your car before you buy the software as it needs to be adapted to your hardware. So if you want to upgrade the exhaust, do that first and tell the software company. You'll then get a software that's better suited to your car and will fully exploit it's potential.
4) Get some good progressive springs such as Eibach or H&R.
5) You may want to consider some of the upgrades that are included in Abbott's Viggen Rescue Kit as they seem to be highly beneficial to the roadholding of the 9-3.
Good luck and keep us posted!
