I'm lucky enough to have many friends in the saab community who are mechanics that specialize in Saabs. To some a 1982 900 Turbo restored to the exact shape it was in when it rolled off the factory floor in Sweden would be the coolest thing in the world. To others a 600hp 1995 9000 Aero that runs with sport bikes is a good time. Both of these types know Saabs like no one else's business, but you'll get very different opinions about 'upgrade' parts from either.
Some of the OEM guys see a failure, note the non-stock part and blame that. 'Hearing something similar from another shop' is not really enough to sway my opinion on the matter. Keep in mind that while your mechanic's range of knowledge may be huge, as he deals with all aspects of the vehicle, that doesn't mean that his evaluation here is correct. You need to open up the failed tranny before you begin speculating on the cause, and even then you may never be 100% sure.
For the most part a stiffer bushing is actually beneficial to the transmission. If you notice that you have trouble shifting gears under heavy load, it may be due to a worn stock bushing or too much power or the stock stiffness not being great enough for the conditions you are putting it through. Keep in mind that keeping NVH down is the critical factor in the softness of the stock piece.
When you are finding that the car doesn't want to smoothly go into gear while you are 'getting on it' its because there is a lot of movement and things are not lining up well. So you swap in a stiffer mount and find that things move around less and the car shifts much smoother underload. In this case you have actually reduced wear, not increased it.
